The week-long Math Institute/Workshop focuses on:
  • Working with manipulatives to enhance understanding of mathematical concepts;
  • Realizing and validating that there are multiple ways to solve a problem;
  • Using arithmetic and computation as by-products of a rich problem-solving curriculum;
  • Incorporating the NCTM standards in the classroom;
  • Preparing your students to successfully meet the challenges of the 21st century;
  • Exploring new models of assessment;
  • Thinking about when to group or not to group your students;
  • Studying the strands of mathematics, including probability, number, geometry, logic, measurement, and patterning.

Faculty For the Math Intitute/Workshop Includes:
  • Gordon Clem.
    Director of this workshop for 46 years; former Head, St. Thomas Choir School, and a teacher of mathematics in grades 5 to 8; national and international math workshop leader.
  • Robert Lawler.
    Former Head of the Mathematics Department at Shady Hill School, and teacher of grades 3 to 8; math workshop leader for public and independent schools; recipient of "Outstanding Elementary School Teachers of America" Award and Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching Mathematics.
  • Annette Raphel.
    Head of School, The School at Columbia University; frequent mathematics workshop presenter; author of Math Homework that Counts; recipient of Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching Mathematics.
  • Ellen Boiselle.
    Math specialist in the Learning Disabilities Program at Children's Hospital, Boston; private math tutor; doctorate in Child Development, Tufts University, with focus on learning disabilities in math.
  • Tom Harding.
    Math curriculum advisor and teacher of grades 6 to 12 at the Potomac School; authored Thinking Through Mathematics; particular interest in the transition from arithmetic to algebra.
  • Karen Economopoulos .
    Co-director of Investigations Curriculum Project; author/developer of many of the Investigations primary units; author of Beyond Arithmetic; former primary teacher; frequent workshop presenter.
  • Anne Scribner.
    Elementary and middle school mathematics teacher grades 4-9, at Shady Hill School, for 17 years. Experience includes being a math specialist as well as a classroom teacher; involved with teacher training, math clubs, and tutoring.
